Anyone who oppresses the poor is insulting God who made them. To help the poor is to honor God. Proverbs 14:31 |
Deacon Robert T. Ekhaml Deacon Bob was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Diocese of San Diego, August 17, 1974. He sees the diaconate as "a distinct vocation which gives me a positive goal."
Assigned to St. Thérèse Parish where he has served for more than 30 years, he continues to preach regularly, and officiates at many baptisms and marriages. He has worked with adult education; trained altar servers & Eucharistic Ministers; and led days of recollection for all church ministers. In addition to his service to St Thérèse he has assisted at St. Brigid's and Santa Sophia, teaching RCIA, Confirmation classes, and Adult Education classes.
He has especially enjoyed his association with the deaf - being the only clergyman in the diocese able to use Sign Language for more than 25 years (also serving in the Diocese of San Bernardino for many years). "The deaf are deprived of contact with God," he says. "If they go to church, they don't know what's going on. It's like watching TV with the sound turned off."
In 2002, he went to Haiti with Food for the Poor, and soon thereafter began preaching for them until his resignation in May of 2010. Deacon Bob is a retired engineer from Pacific Bell. He and his wife, Carol, have 3 grown children. In addition to his parish ministry, he currently volunteers for San Diego Hospice and Palliative Care. |
